About

Welcome to the website of editor and writer Greg Roughan.

It’s a home for my portfolio – as an experienced journalist and editor I’ve amassed a fair collection of published work. It’s an eclectic mix – I enjoy humour writing, offbeat features and travel stories, but there’s a little bit of everything there (except hard news. Yeuk). So if you’re interested you can find some of my work over on the portfolio page.

Otherwise it’s a home for any particular side project that takes my fancy (like this video experiment about coming up with 5 ideas each week). And of course the occasional blog post.

My other work

I’m currently Content Manager for Unleashed Software. Before that I was Head of Content for a small SEO agency based in Auckland. From 2016 to 2019 I was the Managing Editor (and Editor) at Castleford, which is Australia and New Zealand’s largest content marketing agency. And prior to that I was the Editor of a print magazine called Green Ideas, a New Zealand sustainability title targeted at everyday Kiwis. That was the brainchild of Healthy Life Media (you might know them as the publishers of the very successful Healthy Food Guide magazine). HLM is a fantastic company with a huge amount of integrity, and launching and running Green Ideas with them was a wonderful experience. It was also a great learning experience as it involved regular appearances on TV and radio and as a fronts-person for the title at trade shows and events. I was lucky enough to work alongside the very talented Niki Bezzant, Pip Mehrtens and Phil Ryan.

I’ve also worked as a freelance writer, a sub-editor for the New Zealand Herald newspaper, and memorably was the About Town editor for the Sunday Star-Times. It was a role that came with a fair degree of public profile (it involved running the then notorious gossip columnist, plus attending the opening of every envelope), but more to the point was a chance to work alongside some of the best writers in the country.

Some more about me

A family man, I’m married with two lovely daughters and live in Auckland – though I’ve also lived in London, and before that, Christchurch (my home town). I grew up with a passion for the outdoors, which these days mostly means hunting red deer or freediving (and spearfishing) in the incredible waters around New Zealand.

In short, if it’s hard, requires hours of fruitless labour, but comes with a very, very low chance of something exciting happening – like finding a deer, writing a novel, or spearing a giant fish – then I’m probably right into it.

Enjoy the site.
