My mug on your tele

The Fair Go presenters, Gordon Harcourt and Ali Mau

So this morning I was filmed by a crew from Fair Go for my first ever appearance as a talking head on TV. They’re doing a story on some guy in Hamilton who was kicked out of a bar for not taking off his hat, and wanted my opinion on it because – as far as I can tell – I spend lots of time in bars in bad clothes.

We did it at the Longroom on Ponsonby Rd and it was really interesting seeing how TV gets made. There were lots of over-the-shoulder shots, and ‘noddies’, and things done to give it context and make it feel right. At one point they clipped a mike to my collar and threaded the wire down my t-shirt – and I know I should have used the moment to think up clever things to say to the camera, but my mind just went blank, and all I could think was ‘given she’s now the Fair Go presenter, this very same wire has probably been down Ali Mau’s top too…’

Mmmm

Anyway, I don’t hold much hope for me coming across well – TV people say I have a face for radio, and radio friends say I have a voice for print (journo friends can keep their opinion to themselves on my writing) – but if you’re curious to see the show, it’s on TV One this Wednesday (April 13) at 7.30pm.

  1. Update: my piece was cut for time – pooser! The nice people at Fair Go were in touch to say they had to squeeze something new in, so that my bit had to be chopped. Will have to make my teev debut another time…
